This is really the crux of the issue. People try to avoid dog bites for themselves and their children because they are scary, they hurt and they can leave scars. You worry about rabies and infection.

The intolerable thing about the presence of pit bulls and other dangerous dogs is that their attacks can be life altering, or life ending - and especially with pit bulls, can occur any time and any place because pit bulls are so much more likely to attack off their property.

Unfortunately, you need to update your figures. I think it's up to around every 8-9 days now for deadly attacks. :(

The figures cited are a combination of years, not a single year, or in the instance you may be referring to a 5-month period (Jan 1 to May 23, 2013).

I'd wager the presence of pit bulls is more dangerous than firearms. A gun is an object that requires someone to operate it; a pit bull has a brain and acts on its own. A vicious dog is like a sociopath carrying a loaded gun. Something you want in your home, your neighborhood?
