UPDATE 09/05/11: Authorities have identified the infant who died early Sunday after being mauled by a dog. Brayden McCollen was in a baby carrier on the floor in a room at his family's home in Cypress when the dog began sniffing the newborn then mauling him. A spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Thomas Gilliland, said the baby's mother was outside at the time, watching him through a window. The dog pushed through a pair of French doors to reach the baby.

"The dog is a large pit bull. More than 100 pounds. It is unknown now how the dog got access to the child. It appears precautions were taken to prevent this, but it occurred anyway," said Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Dennis Wolfford.

The less than ten pound, 13-day-old baby was in a bouncing seat. Investigators say three people were at home at the time including at least one adult. My Fox Houston, Sept. 5, 2011

09/04/11: Another Baby Killed by a Dog
Cypress, TX - There has been another U.S. fatal dog mauling. The most recent death also involves a newborn. It was reported today that a 13-day old baby boy was mauled to death by the family's pit bull1 Saturday evening. The attack occurred in the 16500 block of Cypress Bridge Drive. Investigators said the pet attacked the baby as it laid in a baby swing on the living room floor. The Harris County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case for possible charges.

1Animal control officials identified the dog as a pit bull. The Harris County Sheriff's Office report has the dog listed as a "lab-mix." Sheriff's investigators clarified later Monday the dog was a large pit bull.

the nanny dog myth is proving to be quite a cruel joke.

Animal Control stated the dog was a Pit Bull. The sheriff's dept states it is a Lab Mix —-with further specification. Can anyone tell me what "FURTHER SPECIFICATION" means?

It means the dog is a pit bull-mix. The sheriff's office likely got the description from the dog's owners — aka pit bull owners — who intentionally labeled the animal an infamous "lab-mix" instead of a pit bull-mix. Animal control identified the dog as a pit bull; that's what matters the most.

The fatality rate seems to be hitting an uptick

i don't know about that. we are in texas after all, that's where cindy marabito resides and practices her craft of lying.

i just saw this fatality in chili on dogsbite decatur, al. so much for "never leave your kids alone with any dog". nanny dogs can't be trusted if you are holding your child. so, does anyone know of any other breed/type of dog that has killed a child while being held in their mother's arms?

Cassandra Garcia, 16-months old, was ripped from her mother's arms by a male rottweiler owned by her grandparents. Her mother, Blanca Garcia, had been house-sitting for her parents when she took her daughter outside to fill the dog's water dish. With the toddler in one arm, she bent down to fill the dish and the dog instantly attacked.

Yesterday, the Harris County sheriff clarified the killer's breed…Apparently, the killer broke through a baby gate to get to the infant.

Manslaughter charges please…at this point there is no excuse for a Pit Bull DBRF…Especially in Texas!

i'm not buying the weight on this dog anymore than i did of Gunner.
