Recent Fatal Dog Attacks in California
DogsBite.org - In 2006, there were two fatalities in the neighboring counties of Los Angeles Co. and San Bernardino Co. Both were attributed to pit bulls. The first instance occurred in Compton and involved an unnamed man who jumped the fence at the Cal State Steel Company. The business owner had a pack of pit bull-mixes on the property, which quickly attacked the man. Upon hearing his screams, security guards called 911. Officers arrived to find the man still under attack. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The second incident happened in Phelan, about 30 miles east of Victorville. 27-year old Shaun McCafferty was fatally mauled by Pam McKee's pit bulls on her mobile home property. McCafferty's girlfriend, Lacy Gidney, found him face down in the dirt driveway. She managed to climb a fence and flee, but not without receiving serious injury to her legs. When deputies arrived, they first thought McCafferty had been murdered due to the trauma to his upper body. Police later arrest McKee on drug charges (running a suspected meth lab).
In 2007, two California citizens suffered death by pit bulls in the month of December. On Christmas day, Kelly Caldwell was slaughtered by a pack of loose pit bulls in the streets of Yermo. Her daughter said that it looked like her legs had been run over by a car. In early December, 62-year old Cora Lee Suehead was found mauled to death on her property by pit bulls. 16 days later, her daughter committed suicide. 8 months later, and just after her DNA results were confirmed -- death due to 4 pit bulls -- her husband died.
2008 has produced 2 more fatalities, making the last 6 fatalities in the State of California each attributed to pit bulls. In October, 5-year old Katya Todesco was violently attacked by a pit bull in Simi Valley. She died several days later, yet neither Ventura Animal Services or Simi Valley Police released this information until 6 days after the attack. The second fatal attack of 2008 occurred in December. 60-year old Gerald Adelmund was killed by two pit bulls while smoking in his back yard. The victim lived at the home with the dogs.
