LawDogsUSA, Pit Bull Detection Dog Program, Shuts Down
October 2008 Closure NoticeOlympia, WA - Back in April, we reported that a handful of pit bulls seized from the Pima County dogfighting raid were chosen to be "rehabilitated" as detection dogs. Diane Jessup, the owner of LawDogsUSA, was the recipient of these dogs. In October, Jessup shut down LawDogsUSA due to lack of interest from the "pit bull community" and lack of adequate funding.
"I had dreamed that LawDogsUSA would attract the best and brightest in the pit bull community and be able to grow larger than just me. While I received fantastic support from a few, unfortunately the support and funding necessary to continue the program in a meaningful way was not forthcoming."Fate of the Pima Dogs
The Pima County dogs did not work out either. She had selected three dogs for the detection program: Pima, Tucson and Arizona. Jessup writes on her website (please scroll to the bottom of the page titled: Update August 2008):
"It is with deep regret that I report that "Tucson" (the male) was found to have developed uncontrollable dog aggression. With no socialization or training to channel his drive during his critical period (21 days to 16 weeks) this pup would never...."It appears she euthanized all three dogs. Interestingly, Jessup does not support "no-kill" or dumping pit bulls into "sanctuaries," which she compares to "above ground pet cemeteries." She writes that the practice "amounts to a boarding kennel" and is the "height of disrespect for our noble companions." She feels that euthanasia in her own arms is the most humane option.
"Both dogs developed a very aggressive form of demodex mange - common in inbred dogs with compromised immune systems - and were being treated for that when I evaluated them for structural soundness. Both girls were suffering from severe..."

"The best and the brightest"
Is there such a thing?

There's an interesting sideline to this.
Nathan Winograd, the Best Friends-connected No Kill anti-bsl consultant who is trying to push his No Kill program into animal control so that it is funded by taxpayers, follows a pattern of enlisting followers to attack animal control/shelter workers where they euthanize for aggression and overcrowding.
He smears the shelter and then works to get his own people to take over and get hired, which just happen to be Best Friends people.
Right now, Winograd and some Best Friends affiliates have been in King County WA where they caught the ear of a gullible council woman.
One of the Winograd people is a Claire Davis, a lawyer who was affiliated with Best Friends. A woman named Kim Sgro is in league with her as they work with Winograd to privatize King County Animal Control so their people can take over. (King County shelter has a high number of pit bulls.)
Kim Sgro, who used to work for Pasado's No Kill organization, was revealed to be the person who made the decision to do what Diane Jessup discusses here http://www.workingpitbull.com/New%20Site%202005/pasado.htm
Kim Sgro was the special projects director then for Pasdado's and she made the decision to dump these Hurricane Katrina pit bulls at EDNAH. http://www.komonews.com/news/archive/4167541.html
When people warned Pasado's, they were threatened with lawsuits.
So here is yet another No Kill who insists that pit bulls shouldn't be euthanized and fights against bsl http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/HOMEPAGE/5_24_WEBSITE/BSL/BSL.htm
who took pit bulls that they COULDN'T HANDLE OR CARE FOR and dumped them to die at a known hoarders.
If concerned citizens hadn't gone to the local cops to get EDNAH shut down, the Pasado "rescued" pit bulls would have all died in the crates they came in on and Pasado's would be claiming they "rescued" and "rehabilitated" them!
So now this same Kim Sgro is in King County with Best Friends affiliate Davis and BF-connected Winograd trying to take over a shelter that has primarily pit bulls!
Since Nathan Winograd has publicly stated that is is ok for aggressive dogs to get placed and opposes bsl and mandatory spay neuter, what do you think will happen in King County if the Winograd/Best Friends people take over?
In some of the comments attached to the No Kill privatization scheme, Claire Davis points out her suggestions: that there be no citizen input and that she and her "experts" make all decisions unchallenged, that they be allowed to go into county code and remove laws they don't like such as bsl, dog limits, breeder licensing. And that animal control and enforcing laws get shuttled to a sheriff's department that can't handle it, and the animal control officers all be fired.
Of course, this is why the breeder lobby (including the pit bull breeder lobby) pushes for Winograd/Best Friends.
It's all the breeders could wish for!
This No Kill/pit bull breeder/pit bull fanatic lobby is all linked and some of the same players come up again and again.
And they all want to take over animal control and get their people in to pursue this extremism at the taxpayer expense.
And the truths behind this "rehabilitation" and "pit bull rescue" activity keep getting hidden under mounds of shoveled you-know-what and marketing shams.

In the pit bull community? Suspect not...

Tammy Hansen of EDNAH " evidently stated she specialized in man-biters and dog aggressive pit bulls"

I'm confused... Diane Jessup speaks out as a "expert" on the pit bull. If you use the link to her thoughts on the dogs taken from Pat Patrick she talkes about the "genetic shyness" of Patrick's dogs and states this is a severe problem.
If genetic shyness to a degree that severely limits the dog's potential for a meaningful life is a reality why is genetic aggression "media hysteria"?

You just nailed Jessup! She's got loads and loads of contradictions. Her website is filled with them...Who knows why she gets away with positioning herself as an expert. Then again, the threshold for being a "pit bull expert" is SO LOW, she's hardly alone in quantifying herself as one.

The strange thing is, many of the pit bull fanatic/breeder/No Kill people hate her because she is honest about the fact that aggressive dogs can't be placed, and that there is no magical "farm in the country" for them, and that they should be euthanized.
I will give her credit for being honest about that.

More words of wisdom from Diane Jessop to show just how nutso pit bull rescuers really are. Kind of brings Ms. Alexander into perspective.
"I am trying to find out what will happen to all the other pit bulls (other than those dumped by Pasados) on the property. Tammy Hanson evidently stated she specialized in man-biters and dog aggressive pit bulls (gee, red flag number one?) So I am wondering about the number of aggressive and potentially dangerous dogs on her property. Desiree saw one dog go absolutely ballistic on Tammy when she was there today picking up some stuff for her court hearing. Our breed certainly does not need these dogs passed off to well intentioned but naive and foolish hands, and I don't know of any reputable pit bull rescue that would mess with man-biters."
"Despite Pasado's claims that the animals were "friendly" the only bites which occurred at EDNAH were six bites to Pasado staff from Pasado "friendly" dogs. So,it would appear either the dogs are not sound or the staff is incompetent. As a pit bull owner, I am very concerned about the possible bad publicity coming from these bites. I know one person was hospitalized. Just what our breed needs.
That, my friends, is why responsible, reputable pit bull rescue groups do not keep man aggressive, unsound dogs alive. It is no good for the dogs or the breed."

NO other breed requires this kind of advocacy. Ever wonder why?

This is the entire problem with the Pit Bull community right here...They don't care about future victims nor unlucky neighborhood dogs...It's the "bad PR" that might shut down the breeding operations.
The woman is a walking contradiction..She sells a CD which contains a section on how to
INCREASE PREY DRIVE IN PIT BULLS.
Why would a sane individual want to increase prey drive in a Pit?

Of course they're not going to support a "law dog" program. The majority are criminals.
