#349: Dogs Shot and Killed After Attacking Pony11/02/08 | Loomis, CA
Summary: Two dogs, a pit bull and a rottweiler-mix, were shot dead after attacking a preschool's pet pony named Sparkle. To get away from the attacking dogs, Sparkle hid in the pond. Despite round-the-clock care for the pony after the attack, Sparkle died 2 days later. Amber Farman, who runs the school, said her husband shot and killed the dogs to stop the attack. #350: BSO Deputy Shoots, Injures Dog

Summary: Broward Sheriff's deputy said he was forced to open fire on a dog in Pompano Beach. The deputy said he responded to a report of a dog bite. That's when the pit bull mix lunged at him. The deputy said he opened fire, hitting the dog in the paw. Ronald Jones made the initial call to report the dog. Jones only suffered a minor bite. The dog was sent to Broward Animal Control.
#351: Shots Fired After Pit Bulls Attack County Workers

Summary: Public Works employees were clearing debris from a ditch in Northeast Bexar County when the dogs attacked them. County officials said the men's supervisor at the site described the bites on their legs, arms and faces as "severe." One of the workers stabbed the animals repeatedly, and a resident fired multiple rounds into the air to scare the dogs. Read full story.

Summary: A pit bull owner is upset that a man with a shotgun shot her family pet. Reportedly, the dog was threatening the man's grandmother at the time of the shooting. The owner of the dog, Elizabeth Hayes said: "He was out maybe 15 minutes. He'll lick you to death, he's slobbery but he won't hurt ya." The animal died shortly after being shot. Police are concerned with the man firing a high caliber weapon in a neighborhood.

#353: Pit Bull Shot, Killed by Stockton Officer
10/31/08 | Stockton, CA
Summary: A pit bull was shot and killed by a police officer after the dog charged him. Stockton Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics officers and the department's Narcotics Unit were serving a search warrant at the time according to a report. A SWAT officer encountered the white and black dog, and it "aggressively charged" toward the officer. The officer shot and killed the animal.

#354: Neighbor Kills Pit Bull Attacking Owner

Summary: When Jonah Krueger was attacked by his pit bull out on the street, he screamed for someone to shoot the dog. His neighbor Daniel Simpson complied and shot the dog in the head several times, killing it, according to Porter County Police. An ambulance took Krueger, 23, of 1659 California Ave., to the hospital. The dog was picked up by Porter County Animal Control. Read full story.

#355: Off-Duty Officer Shoots to Scare Off Pit Bulls

Summary: An off-duty officer walking his police dog near Baron Hirsch Cemetery was menaced by a pair of loose pit bulls, but scared the animals off by firing a single round from his weapon. It was the second instance in a month of police using their weapons to defend against pit bulls. After the catastrophic mauling of Henry Piotrowski by two pit bulls in July, it's only strange that there have not been more shots fired at menacing pit bulls.

When DBO first started tracking these incidents, it was estimated that there were about 200 such incidents per year. DBO was way, way, way off...Looks like it is an astonishing 400 a year!
