Another Pit bull Attack in Brevard County Florida
Dog Killed During Pit Bull AttackMims, FL - Another pit bull attack in a Brevard County left at least one dog dead and another seriously injured. The attack happened Thursday morning. Witnesses said three pit bulls got out of their yard and then ran into a neighbor's yard where several dachshunds lived.
Investigators ticketed the owner of the pit bulls for not having shots or tags, as well as having an animal at large that killed another animal. The fines added up to more than $1,000. A measly penalty for a grisly crime.

What I don't understand is....if I went outside with a gun and shot my neighbors dog, as he was walking down the street on a leash with his owner, I would be arrested and charged with animal cruely....and rightly so. But if I go out and buy a dog that was selectively bred to attack and kill other dogs without provocation or warning, then allow that dog to "get out" and run loose...and that dog attacks my neighbors dog while it is being walked on a leash...disembowels it in front of it's owner, and kills it...I get to walk away scott free?
If you own a fighting breed like a pit bull, and it kills another dog, shouldn't you be charged with animal cruelty? Isn't it cruel to allow your dog to rip the throat out of another dog? If we can prosecute dog fighters for doing it, why not owners of fighting breeds whose negligence causes the horrific deaths of innocent dogs?

your argument is flawless and brilliant

It is "convenient" that a human can be arrested for animal cruelty but a dog cannot. It is convenient that a person's crime toward an animal is inexcusable, and an animal's crime against another is quite excusable.
The dog that attacks is never at fault. The dog's owner is all too frequently faultless as well.

I don't see why intentional dogfighting is considered cruel and tragic, yet the huge numbers of family pets that are lost to pit bulls each year elicit little more than a shrug of the shoulders amonst the so-called "humane community". You can bet that for every dead or maimed pet that makes the news, there are scores of others that don't. I know personally of several scary pit bull attacks on other dogs that NEVER made the local papers in my town.
If you own a fighting breed like a pit bull, you can't honestly say you "had no idea" your dog would savage another animal...dog, cat, horse, etc. You are either an idiot or a liar. That's what these dogs were bred to do. It's like a Labrador Retriever owner claiming "Gee, I had NO idea my dog would love retrieving tennis balls and Frisbees!!! I wonder why he's so obsessed with retrieving? I never taught him to do that!"
Pit bull owners whose dogs maim or kill other domestic pets should be charged with animal cruelty....plain and simple.

can you imagine the response from the looney opposition like cherie graves if we tried to get this passed into law?!

Oh please...Explosive dog aggression can easily be managed by an expert Pit Bull owner who carries a "Break Stick" around with them 24/7!

Recently, a pit bull attacked and killed my sweet cat simply because the poor cat had the misfortune of falling off the fence and into the dog owner's yard. Vicious animals like these that attack and kill innocent, defenseless animals should not be allowed to exist in our society. Do any of you bloggers know how I might get legislation started that would outlaw these monsters in my state or at least within my county/city limits?

I was just reading your blogs, because I just had a similar tragedy. I had two chihuahuas in their own fenced in yard for 8 years. Both adorable and lovable.
One week ago, renters moved in to a home two doors down from us, with 3 pitbulls. Friday morning, two of those pitbulls broke through a neighbors fence, dug under ours and attacked my chihuahuas. I was at work, but my neighbor told me what happened. My female chihuahua ran, and it appeared that my male had tried to fend them off, protecting her. The pittbulls grabed him, pinned him and ripped his jugular. I came home to find his body in the back yard. My female chihuahua is alright, and authorities have the pittbulls. You do everything you can to protect your beloved pets, then some people don't do all they can to make sure their dogs do not hurt others.
