Ocala, FL - Sheriff's investigators seized nine pit bulls from the home of a man who was shot to death. Marvin Travis Wilkerson had been in trouble for dogfighting in the past. In 2002, he pleaded no contest to a dogfighting charge. Before he was killed, one of the gun men reportedly mentioned dog food. Nine dogs were taken from the home and at least one carried signs of recent fighting.
Deborah Wilkerson described her husband of 15 years as a "friendly, outgoing and lovable father" who did not bring trouble into the home. Wilkerson said she was getting ready for church, where Wilkerson's father is a pastor, when the doorbell rang. After he answered the door, she heard something about dog food then gunfire. She managed to push out a window screen and run next door.
The slaying reportedly baffles family and friends.Upon closer examination of the dogs, six of them suffered scars on their mouths, faces, upper bodies, legs and backs. One of the dogs had a heavy piece of chain stuck in its teeth. It seems Wilkerson kept the trouble "outside" of his home on a chain.
