Mocksville, NC - The owner of two pit bulls that mauled a man to death almost two years ago pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Jimmy Ray "J.J." Cowan III, 52, was sentenced to serve 20 to 24 months in jail for the fatal mauling of Charles Gilbert Dalton. It was reported that the dogs often ran loose and that Dalton and other neighbors were afraid of the animals.
The body of Dalton, a Davie County native, was found about 160 feet from a house on Vircassdell Lane, east of Mocksville, on March 14, 2006. A preliminary autopsy showed that Dalton bled to death from multiple dog bites. He had severe wounds on his face, scalp and right hand. Cowan, a relative of Dalton, was indicted on Nov. 27, 2006, for involuntary manslaughter.
The dogs were seized on the night Dalton’s body was found. The male dog, Rocky, later died from parvovirus, a canine disease. The female dog, Infinity, was euthanized under a court order.
