Outdated Dog Laws Protect Irresponsible Dog Owners
Pit Bull Owner Receives Meek Fine for Massive Mauling CrimeAthens, GA - Kelly Edwards needed 350 stitches after being attacked by his neighbor's three pit bulls. He spent nearly a week in the hospital and accrued $48,000 worth of medical bills.
The toughest penalty Barrow County could give the dog owner is a pittance to the vicious crime. Yet these types of meager penalties are common nationwide. One can imagine the look on Edwards face when the judge issued the punishment:
"Judge June Scheunemann fined Spencer $273 in connection to the keeping vicious dogs charges, $70.50 for failing to provide proof of rabies vaccinations and $138 for failing to control the three pit bulls."The owner was also ordered to start restitution payments of $50 a week to help pay for the victim's medical costs. The 67 year-old victim will be 85 years old by the time this restitution is paid.
